Dr. Starrs obtained her Clinical Psychology PhD from McGill University, in 2013. Her early work focused on risk and stress. In collaboration with her mentor Dr. John Abela, her doctoral thesis focused on self-criticism and dependency and stress in Mainland Chinese adolescents. After graduating and working in private practice for a period, she won the Utting Postdoctoral Fellowship for Studies in Depression at McGill University, a position she held for 3-years. During her postdoc, Dr. Starrs worked in collaboration with Dr. Chris Perry on a groundbreaking observer-rated system for coding coping mechanisms from verbatim interview transcripts (Coping Action Patterns, CAP, Perry et al., 2008, 2014).
In 2017, she obtained her first tenure-track position, as Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at SUNY Potsdam, where she teaches an array of clinical classes focusing on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology. Dr. Starrs is the lead investigator in the Starrs Trauma and Resiliency LAB (STaRLAB). Élyse is currently completing her 3rd year at Concordia University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, specialization in Psychology with a minor in Diversity and Contemporary World. She has been Dr. Starrs' right hand since the lab began, working as the Lab Coordinator for the Montreal and the Potsdam team.
Élyse's research interests include the relations between personality and psychopathology, stress and with a main focus on depression in adolescence. She wishes to study underrepresented populations such as POC, the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and Indigenous peoples. After her bachelor's, she hopes to pursue a PhD with a strong desire to incorporate diversity and inclusiveness in all her future research projects. In addition, through her volunteering with the organization ANEB Québec (Anorexie et Boulimie Québec) at their crisis helpline and as a public advocate for maintaining a healthy relationship with food and preventing eating disorders, she has accumulated important experience and knowledge in this specific field. She has also been trained by the AQPS (Association Québécoise de la Prévention du Suicide) to recognize and intervene with individuals presenting high suicidal risk. She enjoys having meals with friends, although she prefers to eat out at restaurants as she is not a particularly good cook. Jillian is a senior majoring in Psychology and minoring in Spanish. After graduating she plans on continuing on to graduate school to pursue a master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In addition to grad school, she hopes to have the opportunity to study abroad or spend time in some Spanish speaking countries in order to better her Spanish speaking skills.

A. Karson is currently a junior in Psychology. He is excited to develop his research skills and hopes to continue on to a PhD in Clinical Psychology with research examining Indigenous identity and trauma.

Madison is currently a Theatre and Psychology double major. Theatre is her first love but, Psychology has provided a better way to understand the world around her. She hopes to one day become a certified Drama Therapist. Theatre, and other art forms, have helped her through so much in her life and she believes everyone deserves that type of artistic healing.
On campus, she is involved in the a cappella community. The group is called A Sharp Arrangement, the only all treble group on campus. She is also a member of Alpha Psi Omega, a national theatre honor society. In her free time, she loves spending time with friends. Together they make music, sing, take road trips, eat food, and just have a good time. She also loves to spend time with her cats Morrigan and Clara. Amy is currently a senior Psychology student with a minor in Sociology. She has a strong passion for working with children and adolescents who struggle with their mental health. In particular, the relationship between anxiety and early onset bullying. After she graduates, she hopes to attend nursing school to become a Psychiatric Nurse, and eventually a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
Amy is part of Sigma Gamma Phi and the Women’s Potsdam Rugby team. She is also part of the Psi Chi Honors Society for Psychology, and has been on the President's list every semester during her time at SUNY Potsdam. Jaelyn is a senior majoring in Psychology with a minor in Human Services: with a mental health concentration. Following graduation from SUNY Potsdam, she wishes to obtain a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling. Jaelyn would like to work with the adolescent population.
Additionally, Jaelyn is a Peer Counselor at SUNY Potsdam and a tutor for TRiO. In her free time, Jaelyn enjoys spending time in the Adirondacks hiking, boating, and spending time with friends and family. Jaelyn is into fitness, and especially enjoys yoga. Ja'Liza is currently pursuing a major in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. Her goal in life is to have an established career as a therapist. She wants to work on creating affordable mental health care for low-income clients because she believes everyone deserves adequate mental health services regardless of their income.

Andrew graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 2019 with a B.A. in Psychology and was designated as a Departmental Scholar in Psychology for academic excellence. He was awarded the Kilmer B. Fredrick Student Research Fellowship for his study examining Substance-Use as a Coping Mechanism in Indigenous Students during his final year and is looking forward to publishing his findings in the near future. His research interests include traumatic stress disorders, disaster mental health, mood disorders, and coping & defense mechanisms.
Andrew is currently pursuing a two-year M.S. degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at SUNY New Paltz. He is also working as the Graduate Assistant for the Institute for Disaster Mental Health at SUNY New Paltz where he assists on various grant-based projects in addition to advising undergraduate students who are in the Disaster Studies Minor at SUNY New Paltz. Zaine graduated at SUNY Potsdam with a joint BA in Psychology and Criminal Justice, with a minor in Human Services. He is currently training to become a peer counselor with SUNY Potsdam's counseling center. His research interests include adolescents and young adults, religion and psychology, and psychopathology.
In 2019, Zaine was awarded the Kilmer B. Fredrick Student Research Fellowship for his study examining spirituality and resiliency in Indigenous students. He went on to win 1st Prize across the schools of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences for his study. In 2020, Zaine was awarded the prestigious Psychology Achievement Award for his accomplishments in both academics and research. Zaine is a member of the community outreach subcommittee for the Diversity and Inclusion Action Committee at SUNY Potsdam. He is also a member of Psi Chi, Alpha Phi Sigma, as well as the Society for Psychotherapy Research. In his free time Zaine likes to write, listen to music, and read. Serena graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Potsdam with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Women's Studies, with honorary recognition by Center for Diversity, Psi Chi Honor Society, TRiO, and Psychology Club, in addition to obtaining the prestigious Psychology Achievement Award for her outstanding performance in both academics and research.
Serena was recently awarded a Social Services Graduate Opportunity Scholarship to pursue her M.S. degree at the University of Vermont. Starting Fall 2019, she is on track to complete UVM's two-year Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. She plans on continuing her work with the lab while attending classes in Vermont. Her research interests include psychopathology, suicidality, and trauma within minority communities. Maritza graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Potsdam with a B.A in Psychology and Spanish. In addition to multiple awards for her service across campus, Maritza was awarded the prestigious Shearer Prize for Research in Psychology in 2019.
She looks forward to continuing her graduate studies at Brooklyn College where she will purse an M.A in Mental Health Counseling, before hoping to move on to private practice. Sabrina Cardinal is a recent SUNY Potsdam graduate with a B.A in Psychology. Following graduation Sabrina will being starting her Master of Arts degree at Naropa University in Boulder Colorado, where she will be studying clinical mental health counseling with a concentration in trans-personal mindfulness-based counseling.
Following her masters, Sabrina hopes to continue her studies with a PhD in clinical psychology. It is Sabrina life-long goal to meld traditional Indigenous healing practices with modern western psychological practice in order to create culturally relevant treatment for First Nations individuals. Her research interests include serious mental illness, the psychological effects of historical trauma, as well as mental health disparities in minority populations. Giselle graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Potsdam with a B.A. in Psychology and a Minor in Human Services.
Before starting graduate school in August of 2020, she is taking a gap-year to gain some work experience, focusing primarily on School and Educational Psychology. She is currently working at the ARC, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She is also working with adolescents on the path towards recovery from substance and drug abuse at Rose Hill Adolescent Chemical Dependency Program for the year. Iris is currently a senior majoring in Psychology with a double minor in Fitness and Community Health. In the future, she looks forward to mentoring troubled youth and adolescents, particularly in the Indigenous population.
Iris plans on going to grad school to get her master's degree. She will be taking a short break after she has graduated in order to gain clinical experience in the field. Kali graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Potsdam with a BA in Psychology with Human Services and Criminal Justice minors in 2018. She is currently in her second year at Wichita State University pursuing a Masters of Education in Counseling. She was granted a research assistantship for the Fall 2018 semester at WSU in the Counseling Department. Her research interests include addiction and co-occuring personality disorders, psychopathology, and early childhood trauma.

Macaula is a senior majoring in Psychology. She is leaning more towards School Psychology & Counseling given her desire to work with youth from kindergarten through to 12th grade. Her plan after college is to take some time off in order to decide where she wants to go next for her Masters.

Skyler is a psychology major, fitness minor, and senior at SUNY Potsdam. Once he graduates from Potsdam, he wishes to broaden his knowledge of psychology by earning a PhD in Clinical Psychology. Ellen graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Human Services with a concentration in mental illness in 2018. Ellen was a Dean’s list student during her time on campus. She is thankful for the training she received in Dr Starrs' lab as it was a unique research opportunity that has helped her to better understand how cognitive errors and coping mechanisms impact daily functioning.
Upon graduation, Ellen decided to further her experience by working as a case manager for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault at Delaware Opportunities Inc. She was inspired to work in this career field after completing an internship at the St. Lawrence Renewal House. Ellen’s future plan is to enter a clinical psychology graduate program, with the intention of eventually obtaining a doctorate in clinical psychology. Her dream is to open her own private practice. Outside of academia, Ellen enjoys nature, cooking, painting, visiting friends, reading, and overall continuing to educate herself on various topics. Shalini graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Potsdam in Spring 2019. She majored in Psychology and minored in Sociology, and is a member of both respective national honor societies (Psi Chi and Alpha Kappa Delta). She worked as an intern on campus and created her own pilot program to distribute plants from the SUNY Potsdam WISER greenhouse to students on both SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University campuses.
Shalini plans on taking a couple of years off to take the GRE exam, look into options for graduate school, and gain experience in the field of Psychology before she continues her studies through a Master's program in Occupational Therapy. Shalini hopes to be a therapist for adolescents and young adults, and later move on to working with veterans with PTSD. She also hopes to integrate gardening and plants into her therapeutic methods. Sarah is currently a Senior, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Community Health. Her primary research interests are treatment effects. Particularly, the integration of technology into treatment protocols for adolescent psychopathology.
Sarah is a member of the SUNY Potsdam softball team and of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. She's also a member of the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology. In 2018, Sarah was selected for the prestigious Presidential Scholar's award, where she is working on developing a web-based intervention for improving mental health literacy under the mentorship of Dr. Starrs. In addition, at the end of the Spring semester, in recognition of her exciting research and excellent academic performance, Sarah was awarded the Canfield Scholarship. In her free time, Sarah enjoys hiking and running. She also likes spending time with her friends and listening to music. Alison graduated Cum Laude from SUNY Potsdam with a BA in Psychology and a minor in a Human Services in 2018. During her time as a psychology major, she was inducted into Psi Chi, the international Honor Society in Psychology, of which she went on to become the President.
After graduating, Alison decided to move to Potsdam full time, and she plans to pursue a graduate program in social work. She hopes to combine her valuable knowledge in psychology, to work on increasing access to specialized mental health services. Delphine is currently a senior at SUNY Potsdam, majoring in Psychology, and minoring in Human Services. Her research interests include family and marriage counseling. After graduation, she plans on pursuing her studies in psychology back home in Montreal.
Delphine is a dual sport athlete as she was recruited to play hockey for the University. She then joined the soccer team as a goalie after her freshman year. Her first language is French and studying abroad in the US has enabled her to perfect her English. In 2018, Delphine was selected for the prestigious Presidential Scholar's award where she will be focusing on examining the relationship between physical activity and stress, under the guidance of Dr Starrs. In addition, at the end of the Spring semester, in recognition of her outstanding academic performance Delphine received a Departmental Scholar's award. Marguerite is currently a senior, majoring in Psychology with minors in Wilderness Education and Therapeutic Recreation. Post-graduation she plans on pursuing a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She would like to be a Wilderness Therapist, with a focus on trauma victims.

Tyler is currently pursuing his bachelors degree with a major in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. Post graduation, Tyler will be pursuing an M.S.Ed. in curriculum and instruction at Potsdam. His main interest centers on utilizing psychology to create efficient and successful work environments.
Tyler is a resident assistant and statistician for the women's hockey team. He is apart of the Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Delta, and Psi Chi honor societies. Shelley graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a BA in Psychology and Mathematics in 2018. Throughout her time on campus, Shelley was a tutor through the TRiO program. She continues to work with children with developmental disablities as a direct support professional through the Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL), which she began doing in her junior year. Dr. Starrs Stess and Coping Lab is Shelley's earliest and most recent research experience. She hopes that she can squeeze in continuing to work with the lab even after graduating. Shelley would also like to eventually pursue research in child psychopathology and autism.
After graduating, Shelley moved near Utica, New York and since has began training for a Behavioral Specialist Assistant position with Upstate Cerebral Palsy. She will be working in a residential home as part of a leadership and planning team. Working under a Behavior Specialist she will be implementing program plans and helping those that the agency supports directly. After a few years with Upstate Cerebral Palsy, Shelley hopes she will have a clearer idea of where she would like to attend graduate school. In her spare time Shelley loves to hang out with her cats, read a great book, sketch on her back porch, or whip up cool recipes in the kitchen. Arianne is currently a third year in Psychology at l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Her research interests focus on Community Psychology. More specifically, she is interested in mental health in socially disadvantaged groups.
In addition to her work in the lab, Arianne is an active local advocate for Greenpeace. Given her additional particular interest in the protection of the environment and wildlife, she would eventually like to find a way to combine these two passions. Valérie is currently in the final year of her undergraduate studies in Psychology at McGill University in Montreal. Her research interests include motivation, personality and stress. She is particularly interested in the biological undermining to these processes and hopes to continue her studies in neuropsychology.
In addition to focusing on her studies, Valérie is a member of Borderless World Volunteers, where she works with grassroots organizations in developing countries to implement long-term sustainable solutions. For example she was involved in the planification of a fundraising program for a Peruvian community organization. Finally, a large part of Valérie’s life has been her involvement in competitive sports. She trained and competed as a figure skater since childhood. Ryan recently graduated SUNY Potsdam with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. Since graduating Ryan has pursued furthering his education through graduate studies in the hopes of earning a PhD.

Elisabeth is currently enrolled as an Honours student in Psychology at Concordia University in Montreal. She is completing her third year as an undergraduate student.
Elisabeth is particularly interested in substance abuse and addiction. She is currently volunteering in Dr. Uri Shalev’s Drug Abuse Lab at Concordia University where she is able to expand her knowledge and earn additional research experience. In addition, Elisabeth volunteers at Groupe Harmonie, an organization that helps elders overcome their substance abuse. After her undergraduate degree, Elisabeth wants to pursue her studies in counselling with the hopes of eventually becoming a licensed therapist. She would like to work in the field of addiction and help those who struggle with it. When she is not studying or working, Elisabeth loves to cook and discover new restaurants with friends. Shakira graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Communication. Her interests focus on working with children with disabilities, particularly intellectual disabilities.
After graduating and taking a gap-year, she is looking to commencing an M.A. in Mental Health Counseling. In her free time she like to read books, write stories, bake, cook and hangout with friends. Abigail graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Community Health at SUNY Potsdam. In 2019, she received a Departmental Scholar's award in recognition of her excellent academic performance.
Her research interests include psychosis, eating disorders, stress and psychopathology. Whilst taking a gap-year, Abigail is hoping to finalize her independent study examining cultural resiliency, suicide and distress in Indigenous students. Abigail is a member of Psi Chi international Honour Society in Psychology. Outside of her studies she enjoys spending time outdoors, particularly hiking, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
